Game Mechanics: While the Fruits Basket card game contains a full deck of cards and comes with the rules for Rich Man, Poor Man (a Great Dalmuti style game that is featured prominently in the manga and anime), the game we are going to be focusing on is the Friends Of The Zodiac game which the full product revolves around.
First, the twelve members of the zodiac and even Kyo the Cat are laid out in a circle. Above them are stacked their four friendship cards. Underneath Yuki the Rat starts the Tohru Honda card. The play deck is then shuffled and three cards are dealt out to each player. After randomly determining first player, play begins.
Each turn, the active player must take a full three actions. Passing is not an action and you may repeat the same action multiple times. The actions are as follows:
Draw a card: If a player has less than four cards in hand, they may draw a card. If at any time a player has more than four cards, that player must discard down to four cards in hand.
Play a memory card: One of the two types of cards in the deck are memory cards. Not only do they depict key sequences from the anime, but they are your key to have Tohru befriend the members of the zodiac. Each memory card has one of six symbols on it which could match symbols on the differing members of the zodiac. The memory area may have only four memories at a time. When a fifth memory is played, one of the previous memories must be discarded. After playing the memory, that player draws a card.
Play an event card: The other type of card in the deck is the event card. These cards have effects that range from moving Tohru around the zodiac circle, manipulating the Sohma clan, and changing the cards around in hands. After playing the event card, the player does what it says and then discards it.
Move Tohru clockwise by one Sohma: Tohru Honda is moved one space around the zodiac circle in attempted to either befriend or influence one of the Sohmas.
Each of the Sohmas (and even Tohru) are double sided and generally at the end of the active players turn, whichever Sohma Tohru is in front of flips over – either from human to animal zodiac form or back again.
If, during the active players turn, Tohru is in front of a Sohma, the player doesn’t already have a friendship card for that Sohma and there is at least one friendship card remaining in that Sohma’s pile, and all of the memory symbols on that Sohma match memories in play (as well as any other friendship conditions being met if any), that player may take a friendship card for that Sohma. Whenever one player collects seven friendships, the game will end. Every other player gets one final turn whereupon the player with the most friendships wins. In case of tie, all tying players win
